This week in my little garden

This is where my radishes reside.  There are peas in the back too.

She is helping me pull some radishes.

He is helping me plant some green beans.

The blueberries are coming on.

More planting.

My blackberry bushes are doing well.

Peas are in the back and I planted pepper plants in the front.

More peas in the back with some pepper plants and some tomato plants.

Strawberries gone wild.

To recap, I have lettuce, spinach, radishes, carrots and peas that are doing well.  My blueberries, blackberries and strawberries are coming along nicely too - hopefully they stay that way.  I just planted some tomato and pepper plants (banana, hot and sweet).  My herbs are doing great although I didn't get a picture of those.  I also just planted some green beans and black eyed peas.

My biggest problem is watering everything because my square foot boxes are around the side of the house and it is a pain to take the hose over there every time.  I would like to try some clay pot irrigation - does anyone have any good (and easy) ideas for me????

The Garden begins - again

I love growing my own fruits and vegetables.  I think it is just amazing how God gives us the ability to grow our own food from tiny seeds.  It is exciting to watch.  I always get excited when the little green stuff pops up after only a few days.  My herbs (some of them) come back year after year.  I experiment with which ones will come back as some of them aren't really suppose to be perennials in my "zone".

I planted radishes, lettuce, spinach, peas, cilantro and carrots.

My friend gave me some of her strawberry plants to add to the ones I already have and I planted those yesterday and it rained all night!

My blackberry bushes are starting to bud.

And so are my blueberry bushes:

Can't wait to see what will come up next.

My Accidental Garden

Since I thought our house was selling I didn't do much gardening this year.  BUT last year I made a kind of compost pile by throwing plants over our fence.

And this year - this happened:

Do you see that - pumpkin vines galore and tomatoes too!  Our neighbor told us she had been watering it and it is going crazy.  Of course we have squash bugs like crazy as usual but we still managed to have about 5 or 6 nice looking pumpkins with a ton more coming on.   The following pictures are kind of a "Where's Waldo" of pumpkins.  See if you can spot them:)

There is a tomato hiding in there.

I have to say I am always amazed by gardening.  I am amazed that you plant a tiny seed and you get all of this produce.  I am even more amazed when you "throw away" plants and you get this the next year.  God is truly amazing, isn't He?

A Garden Update in the month of May

I haven't been doing a lot with my garden except the occassionaly picking and watering.  We haven't had rain here in over a week:(  I hope it is not a dry summer like last year.  We have still been getting quite a few strawberries but again, my daughter eats them as fast as we can pick them and wash them.

My cute little herb pot and yes, my chives are blooming

We have blueberries!  But they aren't quite ready, still a little tart.

I planted way too many radishes since I am the only one that will eat them.  Oh well . . .

We still have our house up for sale so I am not planting as much this year.  I have some blackberries coming on, onions, carrots, lettuce, green beans, garlic and of course radishes.  I just planted two tomato plants and a few pepper plants so I won't have enough to can or freeze from my stash but I am sure I will be hitting up the local farmers to do that.

Garden Update - 5.3.12

I really need to plant some more lettuce, carrots and also green beans, but I just haven't done it yet.  We have been getting lots of strawberries although my daughter eats them as fast as we can pick them.

Here is my lettuce growing well.

Carrots and onions are doing well:

My blueberry bushes are doing well.   I just hope we get a good harvest of them before anything else gets them.

We have our house up for sale but who knows when it will sell so I am still planting but not as much as I normally would.

My Little Backyard Garden - end of March

I still can't even believe I am having garden updates in March.  Right now things are pretty low maintenance.  We did have to cover up the blackberries, blueberries and strawberries this past week because we had a frost.  It seems they made it okay.

A few of my blueberry bushes

My radishes are growing like crazy and the onions are getting taller.  The lettuce is doing well too.

Here is a little pot that I put lettuce and some carrots in

Blackberry bushes (just my second year on these)

My strawberries are really flowering

My chives are getting huge again.  I think I can now safely say that my lemon thyme, oregano, chocolate mint (in a different container not pictured) and parsley have come back.  None of them were suppose to come back in my zone (5) but we had a very mild winter so maybe that helped???

I could use your help.  What else do you do with chives?  I put them on baked potatoes but I'm not sure what else to do with them.  Do you have some ideas?

A Garden in Indiana in March?

I cannot believe this weather.  80's in March in Indiana, what?  I personally absolutely love it.  I mean yes, the ants have started marching in and I have seen some spiders.  The wood bees are attacking the deck in full force but there are usually only two and I think they think of it as their summer home.  They don't bother us too much.  But the fact that we can be outside and enjoying it in March is just wonderful.

I haven't been gardening that long so I'm not sure what this is going to do to my garden because my blueberry bushes are blooming as are my blackberry bushes and my strawberry plants are flowering.  Living in Indiana I just know there are still 30's and 40's in our future.

For now I will take it.   Here is what is happening this week in my little backyard garden:

My Herbs - I left several in to see if they would come back.  Of course, my chives have come back for 3 years now.  My lemon thyme has come back too and it smells so good.  Not too sure what else may make it.  We will see.

My blueberry bushes - I have about 6 bushes with some being 2 year, 3 year and 4 year all in big containers.  It looks like they are all blooming but one.

The non-blooming one:(

My blackberries - I have two "bushes" that are blooming.  I have only had these since last year.

My Garlic - planted last fall and I'm just waiting for a few more weeks to dig it up.  I will plant some more in April.

My Strawberry bed - I really need to clean this out, but I have some plants already flowering.  I guess I will need to cover it should we get colder temps sooner.

Lettuce -  I planted a few different types in this big container and in two of my other boxes

This has my red onions, lettuce and radishes in it
I cannot believe what my garden looks like in March.  I now see why some people choose to live in an area with a longer growing season.  It is so fun to have green things popping up in March!
