A New Goal - Intentional Family Outings

Here is the thing about having 4 children, we don't do anything or go anywhere unless there is some sort of a plan which is against my nature because I am more of a spontaneous, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kind of girl.  I have recently decided that we need to explore this beautiful nature that God created.

My husband and I sat down with a monthly calendar and we first filled in the prior commitments that we had.  Then we filled in his days off - they switch every week.  We have decided that as often as we can we are going on a day trip - once a week hopefully.

You  might think it would get expensive.  We have a plan for that too.  Here in our state you can pay $40 for the year to get into any state park.  We also plan on filling our cooler - one with food, the other with drinks.  We will have to spend money on gas but we will budget for that.

At the parks we plan to explore, hike, picnic for lunch and find a play ground.  We are going to try to find a good carrier for hikes for our 10 month old.

We already have the plans in place for this month.  I like vacation but that is such a short time - once a year or so.  This way we can look forward to ways to be together that don't cost a lot all year long! And on the weeks we can't get out of town we will explore different parks that are on the other side of our town.  We are looking forward to exploring more of our state.

Does anyone else do anything like this?  How do you make it work?

  1. That sounds wonderful! We try to get out for walks at the local parks during the warmer months and go camping one or two times in the summer. It's very cheap and it feels great to be outside.

  2. Thanks Carolyn! It does feel great to be outside. We haven't braved camping yet but we would like to try it.

  3. That's a good deal on the state parks thing. I like hiking but not camping.

  4. Ma,
I haven't been camping in years and am a little nervous about doing it with kids so for right now we are sticking with day trips and hiking. Plus we haven't invested in any camping equipment - tents and such. Although we may barrow some and just try it in our backyard first!
