Popcorn!

I know that I have been marketed to way too much! I just recently started making popcorn on the stove instead of in the microwave. Where have I been all of these years? I thought it would take forever or burn if I made it myself. Well, guess what - it comes out perfect every time and it literally takes about 2 minutes.

In case you don't know here is what I do (I just use the instructions on the back of the popcorn bag).

I have a pot with a lid. I heat up the pot while I prepare my 1/4 cup of oil. I pour the oil into the pot with ONE popcorn kernel. When that kernel pops I pour enough popcorn to cover the bottom of the pot (a little less if you don't want a whole pot of popcorn).

I stand there doing something in the kitchen while it pops. Usually, I am holding up my 3 year old son to show him the kernels popping. He thinks this is amazing!

I usually melt some butter while the popcorn is popping. When the popping slows, I pour the popcorn into a big bowl, pour the butter next and add a little salt - and there you go!

Just as easy as microwave popcorn, I know, except you have to dirty up a pot, but come on - it is not that bad! And you saved some money by making it yourself.

If you want to add some interest to your popcorn, head on over to Frugal Granola and check out this post!

  1. I recently started popping it on the stove too! I usually put all the popcorn in at the beginning. I'll try it your way...sounds great. Thanks!

  2. This is an awesome tip especially since there has been some scary news recently about how bad the microwave popcorn is for you. Whoduthunkit!

Good to know it is not as intimidating a prospect as we have been led to believe ;)

Thanks for stopping by my blog :) I'm glad I stopped by yours!

  3. AWESOME! I have never done this because I thought it would be a hassle. I always use the microwave or my airpopper (which I prefer over the microwave).

I've had other people tell me to do it this way, and they suggested different oils (e.g., olive oil) in combination with something like garlic salt (or whatever you like).

Now I have to try it!

  4. See, that "little" detail you mentioned about a dirty pot...that's my hangup. Since I absolutely despise doing dishes, that's not such a little detail for me. I mean, oily pots are THE HARDEST things to clean. Ugh!

I will give it some thought....

Thanks for the link to my blog. :)

  6. My mother in law does this =D I never buy the microwave packages, they take up too much space.

  7. I pop on the stove too. We get popcorn, still on the cob from our CSA (which happens to be my WFMW post today.) Last year, they sent out directions of how to pop and it is basically the same thing you do.

Do you shake your pan at all while it is popping? I can't seem to help myself, but it doesn't seem like you do.

  8. I do shake my pot every once in a while. I can't help myself either!

  9. There is nothing better than popcorn cooked on the stovetop. My dad fixed it just about every night while I was growing up.

The one time I have tried it on the stove I about burned the house down so I have been grounded from that! :-) But I may have to give it a try again, following your instructions.

  10. Remember when Mamaw used to make us popcorn? This is the same way that I make it too...just like Mamaw does! :-)

  11. we've gotten hooked on air pop popcorn - super easy and so much cheaper than microwave and definitely better for you because you don't have all the preservatives and such!

  12. You can do this in your microwave, too, instead of on the stove top. Brett always makes it for me this way. Of course you have to use a microwave safe dish with a lid ... but we just use my Pampered Chef Micro-Cooker thing I got at your party. Loooove it.
