You see this precious little family may look like your average American family but they are far from ordinary or average. They have been through some hard things in the last 5 years. And when I say hard things I don't mean the hard things we deal with - whiny children, tightness of money - I mean losing a baby girl, losing a job, having brain cancer, not having brain cancer, having brain cancer again.
Tonight we went to a benefit auction for this family. I cannot express to you what a blessing they have been to me in the few years that I have known them. Going to Caden's memorial was one of the saddest, sweetest memorials that I have ever been to. The faith of this couple is astounding.
When I read their story - I have no words. It is enough for a couple to lose a baby girl but to go through brain cancer not once but twice. Even the strongest Christian would have to question. Yet their faith has not wavered. Oh I'm sure they have had their bad days. But the life they have lived in front of us all has been an example about how to honestly live out your Christian life.
"The day Caden died we had a choice, looking back, to scream and rant and shake or fist at God, or to cling to our faith in Him and His character. Looking back we had a choice. At the time, I didn't feel like I did...there was only one choice...we chose God. I remember I kept saying over and over in my head, "God is Good. God doesn't change. He was good this morning...He is still good." I had to tell myself these things because they were and are true, but not necessarily how I was feeling." - Cari
So, yes, we bought a hog. To benefit The Chastian family. And I hope you will go to Cari's blog because she will encourage your socks off.
And once you have read their story and once you have cried - go buy Cari's book that she wrote and then buy a couple more to give to people who are going through their own hard things.
And if you feel led, maybe you could bring out your pocket book and send a check to this awesome family:

Checks may be made out to: Andrew D. Chastain Sole Benefit Trust.
This song - Whom Shall I Fear by Chris Tomelin was one I posted on Facebook this morning. Then they had the words printed out tonight at the benefit. If you get a chance - listen to it. It is a wonderful worship song.
You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Even so, Lord come quickly
I'm so glad you went. And I recommend her book, too. I got it last year for someone I know who is going through a hard time.
ReplyDeleteThis brought tears to my eyes Gretchen. Thanks for loving them so much. Sara
