Yes, I am on my soapbox, but I will be down in a minute!

I had pretty much had it with Oprah after watching "The Church of Oprah". So, I just stopped watching her. I banned her from my television. Yesterday, I just reaffirmed this. I was flipping through the channels and Micheal Moore was on Oprah regarding his documentary "Sicko" which I will not even put a link to because it is a waste of your time. Of course it was in regards to socialized medicine. I know we have a health insurance system that isn't the greatest, but come on people. We live in a free country. We are not socialist (not yet anyway). The government cannot solve all of our problems.

Thomas Jefferson said that, "A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have."

Exactly, hello . . . anyone, anyone? It just makes me crazy that we think the government can do everything for us. I am not saying that the government is evil or bad, but what about personal responsibility? Socialized medicine is not the answer. There are many stories of people waiting months and months for routine medical care in a socialized country. Taxes are at 50 percent or more in some countries to provide this care. What is the incentive to provide better care when the government pays you anyway?

What I would like to know is if it you want to live in a country with socialized medicine, why do you not move there? I will help pack boxes and even chip in for the moving truck. I can even print out the words to "Oh, Canada" to help you start to memorize your new national anthem - was that too sarcastic? Sorry, my point is exactly what Thomas Jefferson said. Here it is again:

"A government big enough to give you everything you want, is strong enough to take everything you have." -Thomas Jefferson

  2. As a citizen of the socialist nation just north of you, I must say I couldn't agree with you more. Our grand, universal health program here in Canada is a mess. Wait times are horrendously long, largely because people are not pro-active about their own health because a trip to the doctor is "free" and they go to the emergency room every time they have a sniffle. The system is so clogged up that even if you have a real emergency, you will likely wait 10 to 12 hours before you get to see a doctor at the hospital. Even after you are "in" it takes months to get even the most routine tests done or to get in to see a specialist.
On top of all that, in general the level of service that we receive is fairly poor as all the hospitals and clinics are government run. There is no economic motivation for them to be run efficiently or competitively.
Another misconception is that we don't have to pay for our health insurance - this is not true. Aside from the fact that we have staggeringly high personal income tax rates, in most provinces you also pay a monthly premium for your health insurance. Then, because our "universal" health insurance plan doesn't cover everything, most people have to buy additional coverage through a supplementary insurance provider. Between what we pay personally and my husband's employer's portion of our insurance costs we pay over $350 a month, but that only covers 80% of most services (ie prescriptions) and we do not have any coverage for vision care or alternative therapies so we have to pay that out of pocket too.
I may be mistaken, but at the end of the day I don't think that the average Canadian pays that much less out of pocket then the average American, but I suspect that in a lot of cases we get a lot less for our money.
I doubt that Michael Moore mentioned THAT in his documentary.

  5. Thank you Sonshine for the award! And, thank you Sarah Michelle for your perspective. I was wondering if Canadians felt that way. And $350.00 is a little more than what we pay but to me, that still seems high to pay for "universal health care". I wish more people knew the truth about it. Again, thank you for sharing that.

  6. I am a lurker, but this post makes me say "Preach on, sister!"

If you don't like it here, don't let the door hit you on the behind on your way out. :-)

  7. I have also denounced OPRAH and her foolishness earlier this year. She has become such a liberal coocoo that I refuse to give her my viewer rating.

And the sad part is that so many people take her foolishness as absolute truth.
